Following Jesus today

Make the sign of the cross and say the ‘Our Father’.

Remind your child that Jesus told the disciples that they must look after the poor and other people who needed help.

The disciples were the early Church and now the people who are the Church today must carry on Jesus’ mission to help those who are less fortunate.

Have a look at the CAFOD website www.cafod.org.uk  and see some examples of ways that vulnerable and needy people are helped by them.

How can we show that we are following Jesus? In what ways can we celebrate his life?

  • As we reach the end of the school year, let us take some time to be thankful for everything we learned in Year 1. Think about how thankful you are for your school, friends, teachers and teaching assistants, for all the things you have learnt, remember to be thankful for staying safe while you are carrying on working at home.

Write a prayer telling God how thankful you are as we approach the summer holidays.

  • Play counting games. When counting, encourage your child to point to each object, putting them in a row. For more than 10 objects, group into tens to see that, for example, 32 is 3 tens and 2 ones.

Practise counting in twos, fives or tens using, for example, pairs of socks, fingers on hands or 10p coins.

  • Play this addition card game:

Write out the numbers 1 to 10 two times, making 20 separate number cards.

Turn the cards face down and pick one at random. This is the number you are going to try to make.

Now, take it in turns to pick up cards. Add each card you pick up together until you get to the target number. If you go too high, you can use your turn to put back one of the cards you have picked up, face down.

When a player reaches the target number, they win!

Following Jesus today

Make the sign of the cross and say the ‘Our Father’.

Discuss with the children the meaning of the word ‘Church’.

What Church do you go to? What happens when you are at mass?

Talk to your child about the term ‘Church’ meaning more than just a building and that it is used to describe the Family of God. Discuss how people who belong to the church try to follow Jesus (meeting together, praying together, hearing & spreading the Good News).

Who were the first people to be members of the church?

Explain that the disciples were the first members of the church.

What different types of people go to church now?

Have a look at Holy Family church online   https://hf-cov.org.uk/wp/ Look on the gallery page at images of the church.

How many different words associated with church can the children come up with?

Following Jesus today

Make the sign of the cross and say the ‘Our Father’.

What special days in the year do we celebrate the life of Jesus? e.g Christmas, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost.

Remind children about Easter and the resurrection

What day of the week was it?

Why do you think we go to church on a Sunday with our families?

Talk about Sunday being the Christian day of celebration.  It was the day of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It reminds us that Jesus is alive and with us today. As God’s family we come together to celebrate.

Talk about Baptism – what can your child remember about what we talked about in class?

 What happens at a baptism?

Can you remember any of the special symbols?

Remind your child:

  • White garment – a sign of God’s love and care. White the colour of Easter.
  • Water – sign of God giving the person a special share in his life. A symbol of new life. Baptism is a celebration of Jesus’ new life. Explain to children when we are baptised we become part of God’s family.

Children to draw a picture of themselves and around this illustrate/ write showing how they are a part of God’s family e.g.  Going to mass on Sunday, praying daily, being like Jesus by doing kind deeds etc

Sharing Jesus’ life

Can you remember any of the disciples names?

Listen to theTwelve disciples song” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiZq3zDl5D4   And say the ‘Our Father’

Talk about the disciples and that they were just ordinary people before Jesus called them.

How did the lives of the disciples change when they met Jesus?  Talk about many people’s lives being changed by meeting Jesus (remember the stories you watched last week?)

Can you remember any of the people whose lives were changed by Jesus? Who were those stories about?  Think about the types of changed that happened to people after they met Jesus.

e.g physical healing (Bartimaeus, the lepers, the paralysed man),

repenting (Zacchaeus, the sinful woman)

other changes (the people at Cana, the 5000 who were fed).

Even today people’s lives can be changed when they try to follow Jesus. They often try to live in a different way to be more like Jesus.   In what ways can we try to be more like Jesus and let him change our lives?

Children record their ideas in an acrostic poem. ‘JESUS’

J – Jesus changed the lives of many people who he met

E – Everyone should try to live more like he tells us to

S - …

Monday 8th June is the proposed date for Y1 children returning to school. This may not be the actual date for coming back as we are waiting for our Risk Assessment to be approved by the Local Authority and Trade Unions. Children will be in groups of between 10-12 max and due to staffing will not all be with their actual teacher. If you have changed your mind and no longer wish for your child to come into school can you please reply through dojo and we can update the register. We appreciate that it is a difficult decision but we want to reassure you that your child’s safety is of our upmost priority. We will keep them informed of any updates as they happen and would like to thank you for your patience.

4.5.20 Weekly RE

What liturgical season have we been celebrating?

What colours do we use to show that this season is a special time for celebration?

What object do we light to show us God is with us?

Easter is an important part of our Church’s year and that during the Easter Vigil we light a special candle called the Paschal Candle like the one below. This reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world and that he rose again. There is this year and an Alpha (A) and Omega (Ω) on the candle to show God is the beginning and the end.

Can you create your own Paschal candle design like the one shown? You can draw/paint it and use things like beads/glitter to make it look really beautiful! After you have finished you can say a prayer with your candle. You can write your prayer down after if you would like to.
