We have been reading the story of 'Handa's Surprise' by Eileen Browne. We explored and tasted some of the seven delicious fruits including bananas, orange, tangerines, pineapple, avocado, passion fruit and mango. We decided which one was our favourite. Using our senses we ; used words to describe the taste and texture, thought about the texture and how it feels in our mouth, discussed what the fruit looks and feels like and talked about the smell of the fruit.
We had a great time! Our teachers were very proud when we tried fruits that we haven't had before.
We have been celebrating Black History month in Reception. We have been reading the story of Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne which is set in the African country of Kenya, Clean Up by Nathan Bryon and books by the illustrator Dapo Adeola . Our African themed role play area has been very popular too!
We also looked at some African tribal necklaces and made our own using the outer rim of a large paper plate. Being inspired by the beaded necklaces of the Samburu Tribe, we used lots of brightly coloured patterns.
We celebrated Hello Yellow Day in aid of World Mental Health Day. It was lovely to see everyone wearing something yellow.
We planted daffodil bulbs in our garden and can’t wait to see them grow.
We read books about our feelings including Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival. We did lots of exercise in our outdoor area. We also listened to relaxing music whilst doing mindfulness crafts. At the end of the day, we decorated biscuits with yellow icing and had them for snack. What a fun day!
Following on from our learning about Creation, we planted some spring flower bulbs in our Reception garden. We had a very busy day planting bulbs in our outside area. We used gardening equipment to make holes in the ground and we put the bulbs very carefully inside and covered them with soil. We talked about what plants need to grow. We planted yellow daffodils in aid of World Mental Health Day #Hello Yellow.
The children were very excited to take part in the activity and even more to find out if our planting experiment worked. We explained that we have to wait until spring time to see the result. We can’t wait to watch them grow. What teamwork!
We have had so much fun this week celebrating European Day of Languages with a French theme. We learned how to say Bonjour and Je m'appelle (my name is..)
We looked at the main landmarks of France and created our own Eiffel Tower. After looking at the artwork 'The Snail' by the French artist Henri Matisse, we made a giant snail collage.
We learned the colours of the French flag and made our own flags using blue, white and red tissue paper.
We even learned how to sing 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' in French and practised the song Frere Jacques. The best part was our yummy French breakfast of brioche, croissant, pain au chocolat and baguette. Ooh la la! Such a busy week : )
